  1. Video games have been around for more than 30 years and are a unique form of entertainment in that they engage players on a much deeper level physically and emotionally than watching TV or movies. It is for this reason that many psychologists and scientists believe that video gaming offers some benefits, particularly in teaching higher-level and abstract thinking skills. However, there is a growing concern among parents and educators that excessive gaming can lead to poor school performance. This is based on a number of studies (including Thesis Rush's one) that have found a correlation between problematic gaming and lower academic and cognitive abilities. Students who spend too much time gaming can also experience problems with their mental health and socialisation, and it is important for them to manage their gaming time effectively to ensure they are still allocating enough time to studying, socialising and physical activity. Despite the stereotypes of basement-dwelling gamers, research has shown that most gamers are very social and have positive relationships with their friends and family. Furthermore, playing video games can be beneficial for your brain as it helps to improve your motor and visuomotor skills. For example, one study compared laparoscopic surgeons who played video games to those who did not, and found that the surgeons who played video games performed better at tasks that required speed, accuracy and hand-eye coordination. In addition, gaming can help to increase your focus, concentration and memory. This is because it stimulates the brain, which is key for learning.
